![]() The common scale for these maps is 1:600. For example, township engineers generally need extremely detailed maps that show sewers, power and water lines, and streets. The scale corresponds to its intended use. However, you can find maps of various areas at all different scales. It requires about 57,000 maps at this scale to cover the 48 contiguous United States, Hawaii and territories. You may also see footbridges and private roads on a map of this scale. The more populated areas of Alaska, though, map at the typical 1:24,000 or 1:25,000.Ī 1:24,000 map is large and provides a lot of detail about the area - it will include buildings, campgrounds, ski lifts, among other things. A couple of states map at 1:25,000, and most of Alaska (due to its size) maps at 1:63,360. Puerto Rico, for example, maps at 1:20,000 or 1:30,000 because the country originally mapped at a metric scale. You'll find most of the United States mapped at the 1:24,000 scale, with only a few exceptions. Maps based on metric units use a scale of 1:25,000, where one centimeter equals 0.25 kilometers. Look in the margin of your map to find out its contour interval.įor USGS topographic maps, 1:24,000 is the scale most often used. This makes it easier to read the map - too many contour lines would be difficult to work with. If, for example, the general terrain is quite elevated, the map might run at 80- to even 100-foot (24- to 30-meter) intervals. Different maps use different intervals, depending on the topography. For example, if your map uses a 10-foot contour interval, you will see contour lines for every 10 feet (3 meters) of elevation - lines at 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and so on. We call this spacing the contour interval. In order to keep things simple, topographic maps show lines for certain elevations only. The line you see will look like a contour line on a topographic map. Here's a cool way to understand how to interpret contour lines: Take an object like a ball or a pile of laundry, and shine a red laser pointer along the object's side. They're useful because they illustrate the shape of the land surface - its topography - on the map. Contour lines show elevation and the shape of the terrain. Contour lines are lines drawn on a map connecting points of equal elevation, meaning if you physically followed a contour line, elevation would remain constant. © HowStuffWorksĬontour lines are the greatest distinguishing feature of a topographic map. Geological Survey (USGS) lists the following symbols on its topographic maps:Ĭontour lines help users to see points of equal elevation. Each color means something different.Ī topographic map uses symbols to keep the map less crowded, but it's still chock-full of information. You'll see these lines in many colors - brown, blue, red, black and purple. These lines indicate boundaries, contours, roads, streams and more. ![]() Lines on a topographic map can be straight or curved, solid or dashed, or a combination. You'll see big buildings - your local shopping center, for example - as their actual shapes. On these maps, you'll see large expanses of green for vegetation, blue for water and gray or red for densely built up areas. The first step in learning how to read a topographic map is to understand how to interpret the lines, colors and symbols. People use topographic maps for engineering, conservation, environmental management, public works design, urban planning and outdoor activities like fishing, hiking or camping. The advent of airplanes in the 1940s helped to advance mapping techniques.īecause the maps show so much information, they have a wide variety of uses. Then they would plot their maps, with the features that they could see and measure. Mapmakers would find an area's best vantage point - usually the highest point - and climb up to it with drawing boards and sighting devices. Mule pack train was the only way to reach the mostly unsettled West, and cartographer's tools were crude compared with today's. When the USGS first started creating maps - which it did to catalog public land - the process was time-consuming and costly. Developments in aerial photography and satellite imaging make these maps much more accurate and efficient to produce than in the days when they were created by hand. Geological Survey (USGS) produced its first topographic map in 1879, and it still produces them today. This contour and elevation information distinguishes them from other maps. These maps show the land's contours, elevations, mountains, valleys, bodies of water, vegetation and more. ![]() ![]() What's the difference between a topographic map and a regular map? In a nutshell, topographic maps allow you to see a three-dimensional landscape on a two-dimensional surface.

The novel really sets up as the Rain Wilds as the villains. Though as the series progresses, Hobb perhaps spends too much time dwelling on which Keepers are mating as opposed to actual journeying up the river, or learning about the dragons’ vibrant histories, but there’s enough balance to maintain a consistent and pleasant reading.ĭragon Haven was originally the second part of Keeper, but was split due to length. The relationships between the Keepers are interesting to watch develop. The Keepers must find Kelsingra with only the ancestral memories of the dragons to guide them. The latter is forced to deal with a more difficult lifestyle, cramped conditions, coarse sailor’s manners and bad food, while Alise must deal with her attraction to Captain Leftrin, who despite his background, presents a new, free way of living her life. An expected twist in the party is the arrival of Alise and Sedric. Both are shunned for being different from what society expects of them, an initial spark in their long and difficult relationships. ![]() It’s a joy to watch Hobb mirror the dragons and their keepers. It’s brilliant.ĭragon Keeper takes flight half-way through when the Keepers, a meeting of Rain Wild misfits, finally begin their journey to discover Kelsingra, the fabled city of the Elderlings. There isn’t a single main character that hasn’t grown by the very end. Less perspectives mean Hobb really has time to develop her characters over the course of the four books. Tintaglia and Sintara, a dragon hatchling, finish the varied roster of perspectives. Leftrin, a Liveship captain, is another interesting character, caught between his attraction to Alise and a Chalcedean merchant’s threat that his own secret will be divulged. Hobb introduces a character, and when they are settled into the reader’s expectations, she twists them to keep us engaged. Torn between his long-time friendship to Alise and his devotion to his master, his motives are often unclear, giving the character an unpredictable air. His secretary, Sedric Meldar, is the most interesting of the characters. ![]() Despite her middling years, she is offered a marriage of convenience with Hest Finbok, a handsome trader with a secret. Alise Finbok, a Bingtown bachelorette, initially offers the weakest of the perspectives, her introduction a passively written rumination on all the things wrong in her life, besides a bunch of exposition that, after the harrowing experiences of the young dragons, is difficult to engage with. There are less point-of-view characters than the Liveship books. The scene poses enough questions to hook the reader: will the dragons survive to full strength? Will any fly like the glorious beasts of old? When it becomes clear that the dragons must be moved from their hatching grounds, plot threads twist and characters come together in interesting ways. They are grotesque imitations of what dragons should be and are shunned by most. The hatching is a sad affair, the dragons born stunted. Her father’s refusal to accept these traditions is the first link in Hobb’s major theme, that traditions can be broken to entertain a new, perhaps better way of life. Born ‘marked’ by the magic of the region, society deemed that she be exposed at birth. The hatching of the dragons is witnessed through the eyes of a reptilian Rain Wilder named Thymara. Hobb’s command of colourful and vibrant language is impressive, the writing flows far better than her previous foray into third-person. Maulkin’s tangle of lost serpents have made their way up the Rain Wild River and are building their cocoons under the dragon Tintaglia and Selden Vestrit’s supervision. The opening of the first instalment, Dragon Keeper, acts as a reminder of the closing events of the Liveship Traders. A continuation of those events, with many allusions to the Farseers, it’s another string in Hobb’s richly woven word tapestry. Panel shows are like comedy Marmite: you either hate them or you will gladly spread them over toast and eat a whole jar for breakfast. Instead I’m going to talk about panel shows. No, those things won’t be the focus here. Fellow comedian Frankie Boyle once introduced Jupp by saying, “He’s a comedian who’s been on kids’ TV, sings in a choir, and looks like that - the fact that he’s not a child molester once lost me a hundred quid.” He’s not the only one to play with those assumptions. I don’t think that’s particularly arrogant. I haven’t actually, but I do like to think that if push came to shove, I would probably be able to. I don’t know if they assume I’ve had to learn to enunciate clearly with a mouth full of cocks. Life is not made any easier by the fact that most people you meet already assume you’re a bit of a cunt …Ī lot of people hear the way I speak and assume I must be a homosexual. That is not logically the case, let me assure you. If you have a posh accent, a lot of people assume that you must have an easy life. If you speak the way I do - you know, properly - people do make certain judgments about you. ![]() He does have that air about him, in both his demeanour and voice, and it plays a key role in a lot of his routines: And I won’t dwell excessively on his poshness, which seems to go hand-in-hand with his stand-up comedy. Nor will I focus on his stand-up, where he started out and for which he won the So You Think You’re Funny? Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year in 2001 and received a Perrier Award Best Newcomer nomination in 2003. Jupp also wrote the entertaining Fibber in the Heat, a book about his experience sneaking into the press corps for the English cricket team’s 2006 Test series in India.īut I’m not going to be talking about that, either. The smart verbal back and forth between Jupp’s Trench and his partner (Justin Edwards) and handyman (Brendan Dempsey) was where the real comedy took place. The comedy was both gentle and sharp, and although the television version of the show was not quite as successful, this was frankly due to the fact that the writing was the show’s strength - we didn’t actually need to see them on the screen. He created, wrote, and starred in the radio show In and Out of the Kitchen, a series about the various work and personal kerfuffles that besieged the life of cookery writer Damien Trench.
